故事发生在民国初年，月黑风高的夜晚，阴冷萧索，鬼影幢幢。江南某个古老小镇，一个有着悠久历史沉淀的人家，突然传来了凄厉的呼声。次日中午，县座局长带着手下匆匆前来，原来住在商会会长周哲庵家中的远方亲戚的孩子意外死亡，目睹现场的女仆被吓得疯疯癫癫，她一口咬定这个青年是被狐狸精要死。经过现场勘查，青年确系为狐狸咬死，然而现场的种种疑点依旧让人无法匆匆定案。适逢中秋，县长请来当地名流、周哲庵、新任司法部长赵景白、佛门高僧如海法师以及风尘女子吴佩玉。吴佩玉请来名歌女小孔雀献艺，谁想小孔雀竟在席间身亡。狐狸迷案，难辨真凶…… 本片改编自高罗佩《大唐狄仁杰断案传奇》中的一则故事。。Based on a true story of the American Civil War, culminating at the Battle of New Market, May 1864.
